Key Findings & Identitfied Probelems
Based on comprehensive field research involving 5 kids, 10 adults, 30 teens, 10 parents, 3 doctors, and 5 teachers through telephonic and conversational interviews, the study reveals critical gaps in India's sex education landscape. The research uncovered alarming statistics: 88% of male and 58% of female university students received no parental sex education, 50% maternal deaths occur due to unsafe abortion practices, 14% pregnancies are unplanned, and 40.9% women lack contraceptive access. The gaps identified system maps three core challenges creating reinforcing negative loops: communication gap stemming from conservative societal stigmas and taboos, lack of clarity due to reliance on unreliable sources and misinformation spreading through social media, and absence of comfortable conversations as families avoid direct discussions about sexuality. This research exposed how inadequate sex education for teens aged 13-18 perpetuates cycles of misconception, low self-awareness, body consciousness issues, and poor communication confidence, ultimately leading to risky sexual behaviors and uninformed health choices.
The study's mind mapping exercise revealed sex education encompasses critical topics from human development and relationships to sexual health and personal skills, yet existing approaches through government initiatives, apps, websites, and NGO campaigns remain fragmented and inaccessible to the target demographic who desperately seek non-judgmental, timely information to navigate puberty, relationships, and sexual health decisions safely.
