Thangka Painting: Reviving Heritage Through Design Intervention

Over six transformative months, our team journeyed deep into Himachal Pradesh to document Thangka painting—one of India's most sacred yet endangered art forms. Through immersive field visits across Kullu, Dharamshala, and Mcleodganj, we conducted extensive interviews with master artisans, analyzing their craft's intricate design elements, color symbolism, motifs, and centuries-old production processes while uncovering the harsh realities threatening their survival.

The Research Journey:

Using system design thinking, PESTEL analysis, and community mapping frameworks, we explored every dimension—from the spiritual narratives embedded in each brushstroke to the economic challenges silencing these artists. Our ethnographic approach revealed artisans struggling with limited market access, lack of digital presence, disconnection from contemporary interior design trends, and fading awareness among younger generations about Thangka's cultural significance.

The Solutions:

Responding to identified gaps, we developed Artisan Identity Cards providing professional credibility and market visibility; a digital platform connecting painters directly with global buyers, interior designers, and culturally conscious consumers; and Vastu-based placement guides helping users integrate Thangkas meaningfully into modern homes, bridging tradition with contemporary aesthetics. These interventions aimed not just at commerce but at dignifying craftsmanship, raising traveler awareness, and ensuring centuries-old wisdom doesn't vanish into oblivion.

By empowering artisans with tools to navigate the digital economy while honoring their heritage, we transformed isolation into connection—giving Thangka painters the agency to sustain their livelihoods, pass knowledge to future generations, and position their art not as relics but as living, breathing expressions of India's vibrant cultural tapestry.
