Research Analysis on Obesity in India (Young adults)
This comprehensive field research on obesity among young adults in India reveals alarming statistics where one in every four Indians now faces weight problems as of 2022, with obesity prevalence among adults aged 20 to 39 years reaching 41.8% according to National Family Health Survey data, particularly affecting urban populations where 33.3% suffer from obesity compared to 19.7% in rural areas. Through mixed-methods research involving expert panel consultations with medical professionals (gynecologists, pediatricians, neurosurgeons from AIIMS Bhopal), PESTEL analysis examining societal forces, and understanding the multifaceted drivers spanning medical reasons (genetics, metabolism, thyroid), psychological factors (stress, depression, low self-esteem leading to emotional eating), physical environment constraints (work-life imbalance, transportation infrastructure limiting activity), and social dynamics (fat-shaming creating taboos, biased brand marketing stereotyping body types), this study validated that obesity cannot be solved by a single intervention but requires a holistic systems approach. The research concluded that young adults between 21 to 30 years represent the critical intervention demographic where habit formation impacts lifelong health outcomes, leading to actionable design opportunities for creating inclusive fitness solutions, destigmatizing body image narratives, and developing accessible health interventions that address India's unique socio-economic and environmental obesity drivers in metropolitan centers.
Research Findings & Gap Identification
The ecosystem mapping demonstrates how obesity functions as a reinforcing causal loop, where genetic factors, social pressure, body shaming, and economic burden create interconnected cycles affecting physical activity, eating habits, and overall wellbeing, highlighting the need for accessible, engaging solutions that reduce effort while delivering instant gratification.
Based on the comprehensive obesity research study, the primary user personas identified include busy working professionals aged 22-48 struggling with weight management due to hectic schedules and lack of motivation. The research reveals significant market gaps around three core issues: people lack the involvement and zeal to use existing weight loss resources despite numerous options available; busy lifestyles leave individuals too exhausted or time-strapped for self-care; and motivation plays a crucial role, with many ignoring their health until external push factors emerge, highlighting the need for accessible, engaging solutions that reduce effort while delivering instant gratification
Final Concepts
*The product and the application is a prototype and Product imagery to get a visualization of how the solution would come out as in the market. It does not represent the complete product designa and application prototype.
Based on the research findings, the proposed solution addresses the obesity ecosystem through a comprehensive multi-touchpoint approach combining products, brands/systems, and applications. The concept introduces affordable effort-reduction tools like packaged diet materials and gift hampers that tackle the primary gap of lack of involvement, while gamification elements and instant reward systems provide the motivation users desperately need. The application leverages personalized consultancy, doorstep services, and collaborations with existing platforms to break the reinforcing loop of stress eating and demotivation identified in the ecosystem map. By offering customizable alternatives, discipline-building features, and awareness-driven engagement, the solution transforms the vicious cycle into a positive feedback loop where reduced effort leads to consistent action, building self-confidence and breaking through societal body shaming and social pressure, ultimately creating a supportive environment that addresses both individual wellbeing and broader infrastructure needs for sustainable lifestyle changes.
